Project Proposal:
Section 1:
For my final major project I have decided to piece together a mixtape. The concept behind my mixtape is influenced by analog and digital technology which I will be utilising to create this project. My plan is to include retro styles of music with a modern take using new sounds to enforce them. The sound of my mixtape is influenced by albums like “1999” by Prince, “Discovery” by Daft Punk, “The Velvet Rope” by Janet Jackson and “Graduation” by Kanye West. These albums have had a huge impact on me since I was a child and shaped the way I view music.
I have previous experience in producing a project so I aim to have more solid ideas by the end of this process. In addition, I envisage this as an opportunity for career development and for strengthening networks with other creative artists and professionals in the industry.
To start my project I will brainstorm ideas around the mixtape and sound selection and then I will book a series of studio sessions to start the creation of the songs. During this project I will often refer back at the Exploration of Specialist Study and Context part of Unit 10 which will help me to maintain constant contact with the objective of my final major project.
For this mixtape I will try to avoid staying in my comfort zone and try to showcase many variations of my own style in production and not replicate what I have already created. This is a vital project for me because it will teach me how to structure songs interestingly and have multiple elements in the production especially because this is an instrumental project and I want my audience to be entertained.
Section 2:
For my research I intend to use both primary and secondary sources to guide my final major project. For my primary research I will set up a listening party with my pairs and ask them to give me a review on the mixtape once I have created most of the songs, that way I could make adjustments to parts of the project to make improvements before its release. For my secondary research I will read reviews on albums this project is influenced by and try to incorporate elements that was acknowledged by critics.
Section 3:
During the development of my proposed project it is possible complications will occur with the mixes during the production stage of my mixtape so I aim do research with my various sources and analyse what the best results for me are and implement them during my creation. Another obstacle I can encounter is losing the work I have created so I will make backups of everything I have started on my hard drive and drop box to be secure. During Unit 8 my group was working in the studio and our computer crashed but I had already saved our work and I also made another copy of it just in case this happened which saved us a lot of time.
Section 4:
During the early stages of my proposed project I will brainstorm ideas and write concepts, then later in the weeks I will book many studio sessions to start the creation of the songs. In the later stages once I have finalised my product I will begin the marketing stage so I promote it.
Section 5:
As I am crafting songs from scratch I will need plenty of studio time and equipment, which will consist the use of analog synthesisers as I will be merging both analog and digital sounds for my mixtape and a digital audio workstation where I will be creating my compositions. What I studied in Unit 5 will play a vital role in my mixtape as I will be making my own sounds using the ES1 and 2 as well as other virtual synthesisers to create my own sounds.
6:
At the end of each week I will assess my progress of the project on my project action plan and timetable so I am not behind on deadlines and give myself enough time to produce quality music. Through these weekly evaluations I aim to set myself specific targets that will be able to recognise my deficiencies and strengthen them. If I am not satisfied with my results at the end of each week I will utilise my resources to aid my project, also during my studio sessions I plan to video record and take notes of my highlights and struggles so I know where to improve next for my later session which will uploaded onto my blog.
